BBQ Sauce (Sugar-Free)

Simmering the sauce low and slow for a full 20 minutes, uncovered, is what reduces and concentrates its flavor into a thick, sticky glaze instead of leaving it thin and watery.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups no-sugar-added tomato sauce
  • 3 tbsp allulose
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (gluten-free)
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne (optional)

Method

  1. 1

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer.

  2. 2

Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for a full 20 minutes, stirring occasionally — simmering it low and slow like this, uncovered so steam can escape, is what reduces and concentrates the sauce into a thick, sticky glaze; a quick simmer or a covered pot traps the steam and leaves the sauce thin and watery instead.

  3. 3

The allulose will help the sauce take on a glossy, slightly caramelized sheen as it reduces, similar to how real sugar behaves.

  4. 4

Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

  5. 5

Cool completely before storing in an airtight container in the fridge up to 2 weeks.
